These 10 American towns have the biggest homes – and most of them are far from the big cities
A new analysis reveals the 10 American towns where people enjoy the most space at home — and they’re not where you’d expect. Most of these communities are far from the big cities and boast median home sizes well above 3,000 square feet.

In Denmark, where I’m from, we like to talk about space — especially how much of it we have in our homes. Well, some of us do. It’s one of those quiet comforts that shape how we live. And while we might consider 75 square meters per person spacious, some American towns are playing in a different league entirely.
Living in Denmark, Scandinavia everything in the US just seems bigger.
Out of curiosity, I dug into U.S. housing data to see where in the country people really spread out — not by price, but by median home size in square feet (I had to find my calculator for this one since I’m not familiar with that unit of measurement…) What stood out wasn’t just the numbers, but the locations: the biggest homes weren’t in the major cities (to my surprise), but in small towns, growing suburbs, and quiet resort communities.
Here’s a look at the ten American towns where homes are, quite literally, bigger.

A closer look at the towns
I wanted to investigate information regarding these small towns with big houses.
Here’s what I found:
- Greenwich, Connecticut
A coastal town just outside New York City, Greenwich has long been known for its historic mansions, manicured lawns, and quiet wealth. It’s a place where homes come with tennis courts, wine cellars, and plenty of extra space. At nearly 5,000 square feet, it tops the list with room to spare.
- Cordova, Tennessee
Cordova sits on the edge of Memphis and blends suburban sprawl with a calm, residential vibe. The homes here are roomy, often with open layouts, finished basements, and big backyards. It’s not technically a town, though.
- Castle Rock, Colorado
Halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs, Castle Rock is surrounded by natural beauty and full of new developments. The homes are large, the views are great, and the pace is a little slower than the cities nearby. It’s a popular spot for families who want space — indoors and out.
- Prosper, Texas
Once a small farming town, Prosper has grown quickly over the last decade. The new neighborhoods are full of large, brick homes with spacious garages, media rooms, and covered patios. It’s a town that wears its name well.
- Big Sky, Montana
Big Sky isn’t just a name — it’s a way of life. Apparently. This mountain town is best known for skiing, hiking, and vacation homes with big windows and even bigger footprints. With fewer than 4,000 residents, it’s easily the smallest place on the list, but the homes are among the largest.
- Southampton, New York
As part of the Hamptons, Southampton combines beach town charm with high-end real estate. The homes are made for hosting — think guest suites, pool houses, and grand porches. For many, this is the summer home. For others, it’s home all year round.
- Herriman, Utah
Herriman is a fast-growing town at the edge of Salt Lake City, where new developments have taken off in recent years. The houses are big, the families tend to be too, and the views of the Wasatch Mountains don’t hurt. It’s the kind of place where three-car garages and five-bedroom layouts are standard.
- Windermere, Florida
Surrounded by lakes and tucked just outside Orlando, Windermere feels private and peaceful despite its proximity to city life. The homes here are big, bright, and often custom-built. Palm trees, swimming pools, and long driveways are part of the landscape.
- Carmel, Indiana
Carmel is a suburb of Indianapolis that’s become known for its roundabouts, walkability, and growing arts scene. It’s also a place where homes regularly top 3,000 square feet. Residents enjoy big living spaces without giving up the amenities of a more urban area.
- Overland Park, Kansas
With nearly 200,000 residents, Overland Park is the largest city on the list — but it still feels like a suburb. The homes are large, modern, and built for comfort. It’s a place where families spread out, both in square footage and in backyard barbecues.
How this research was conducted
This ranking is based on the most recent publicly available data on median home size, collected from Realtor.com’s housing market reports and U.S. Census population estimates. To focus on local relevance, we filtered for towns and suburbs with a population under 200,000 — with a special focus on those below 75,000.
I used median rather than average to avoid distortions from a few oversized luxury properties. All square footage figures reflect typical home listings from late 2022 through 2023 — the most consistent and up-to-date national data available.
In a country where bigger isn’t just better but sometimes expected, these towns are quietly leading the way in square footage. From mountain lodges to lakeside retreats and suburban family homes, they offer a glimpse into what space looks like when it’s not limited by city living.
And yes — for anyone wondering — they’re probably vacuuming a lot more than we are in Denmark.
