Established in 1992 and move-in ready by the following year, A/B Møllen transformed a former campsite in a small Danish village into a vibrant cooperative. Here, the focus is not on maximizing profits. According to Chairman Torben Johannesen, the cooperative uses public assessments of value rather than independent valuations.

This mindful financial approach ensures high maintenance standards, a healthy financial foundation, and stable living costs. In fact, rent hasn’t increased in five years, a trend A/B Møllen expects to maintain. Beyond finances, the cooperative emphasizes meaningful and engaged daily life through community workdays and events, creating a natural sense of togetherness. This ethos led to A/B Møllen being named Housing Cooperative of the Year 2024 by the Danish Association of Housing Cooperatives (ABF).

A/B Møllen’s active social life is a key reason for its recognition as Housing Cooperative of the Year. Chairman Torben highlights the cooperative’s approach to shared responsibility: no one shoulders the burden alone. The cooperative organizes at least four community meetings annually, a general assembly, and ongoing activities catering to residents of all ages and physical abilities.

“We host a range of activities, from nature outings and basket-weaving courses to film nights, choir rehearsals, dance evenings, and outdoor screenings. Often, 24-25 of the 26 residents participate in both the fun and the practical tasks,” Torben shares.

This inclusive mindset ensures all activities are accessible and valued, fostering a deep sense of belonging. Daily tasks like gardening, snow clearing, and even larger projects such as building bicycle sheds are handled collectively, with no one expected to contribute more than they can manage.

To secure its future, A/B Møllen emphasizes diversity in its resident base. While most residents are aged 55 and above, the cooperative seeks younger members to bring fresh energy to practical tasks and new ideas. An interest list plays a central role in finding new shareholders.

“We place a strong emphasis on community and social values when interviewing potential new members,” Torben explains.

By prioritizing engagement and shared values, A/B Møllen ensures that new residents align with its unique culture.

A/B Møllen uses its Anyhoa-powered website to showcase the cooperative. Practical information, minutes from general assemblies and meetings, and details about available units are easily accessible to both residents and prospective buyers. Visitors can learn about the cooperative’s values, download bylaws, and explore a gallery featuring photos of community events.

“It’s great to upload minutes and photos to the website,” Torben notes, adding that email and SMS are used for practical reminders.

While digital tools are helpful, they are not the core of A/B Møllen’s operations. The cooperative prioritizes human connection, with online tools serving as a supplementary resource. However, the website offers a convenient platform for those curious about the cooperative and gives current residents an organized space for accessing documents and event updates.

A/B Møllen is a shining example of how a housing cooperative can prioritize community, financial responsibility, and engagement. With dedicated residents, careful economic planning, and support from Boligforeningsweb’s digital platform, they’ve created a cooperative that fully embodies the title of Housing Cooperative of the Year 2024.
